Ask-a-Tech:"My vehicle’s 'low coolant' message came on. Does this mean my whole air conditioning system needs to be flushed or should I literally just add 'coolant' to ensure that the air conditioning system is working efficiently?"
"This is a very good question, as many motorists confuse 'coolant' and 'Freon'. Coolant is just another name for antifreeze, which helps keep the engine cool and its components lubricated and guarded from corrosion. Additionally, antifreeze guards well against freezing conditions in extremely low temperatures. Freon is what resides within your air conditioning system to keep the air inside the car cool during warmer temperatures.
A low coolant message exists to let you know that the coolant level is below dealer specification and a leak may be present. It is best to top off the coolant level and have the system checked immediately by a professional to determine if the condition is serious or not. If the car begins to overheat, shut it off and have it towed, as this can lead to more serious and expensive repairs."
